Showpo is a powerhouse of Australian e-commerce but the rocket ship really took off when Jane Lu, founder, made the brave decision to bring her genius husband into the business and appoint him CFO.
With $85m in turnover in 2019, Showpo is no shrinking violet, but James Waldie is a powerhouse himself. After a career in banking and a stint at Uber, the mathematician and statistical genius said “yes” a second time when Jane invited him to join Showpo in a union extending beyond their personal relationship into the business realm.
Jane met her future husband and long-term business partner James Waldie on an exchange trip to Sweden in 2008. James, who was appointed CFO in 2018, proposed during a romantic gondola ride in Queensland a decade later. In a business full of attractive models adorned in fashionable clothing, Waldie is certainly happy to have his wedding ring proudly on display to keep the interest levels in his relationship status to an absolute minimum as he crunches spreadsheets and looks for trends and data insights to help Showpo’s sales rise above their organic growth rate.
The couple married in October 2019 surrounded by close friends and family in a lavish ceremony at Sergeants’ Mess in Mosman, Sydney.
Working with your partner is not without its challenges however, with the powerhouse couple welcoming their first child, a son named Lachie. To keep their relationship sacred, neither supervise each other’s work and James is wise enough to enjoy Jane’s inimitable success. It’s hard not to love Jane Lu’s meteoric rise in Australian e-commerce, but Jane also admires James’ separate skills that allow the power duo to be without competition in fast fashion.
Waldie said that apart from cheering each other on, Jane certainly appreciates his fashion sense, making a point of dressing for work in the way she loves and appreciates.
